Assessment Integrity

Every Charvak certificate reports what happened during the assessment — the environment, the signals, the raw facts. No verdicts. Here's how to read it.

Why we record the environment

AI-assisted cheating is the single biggest credibility problem in assessments today.

In 2026, anyone can paste a question into ChatGPT, get an answer, and submit it. Traditional proctoring (webcams, human invigilators) doesn't scale, costs a lot, and creates anxiety for honest candidates.

Charvak takes a different approach: we record the environment signals that indicate an assessment's integrity, and we report them as plain facts. No accusation. No automated verdict. The employer sees exactly what happened and decides what it means for their role.

What we record

Five environment signals, recorded silently during the assessment. Nothing is blocked. Nothing is judged.

📋
Paste
Content pasted into an answer field
Recorded when the candidate pastes text or code into a response. Not automatically a cheat signal — some candidates paste from their own notes — but worth noting.
↔️
Tab switch
Candidate left the assessment tab
Recorded when the browser tab loses visibility. A few tab switches is normal — checking the time, answering a message. Eight or more during a 10-minute assessment is unusual and worth an interview.
🖱️
Context menu
Right-click menu opened
Recorded when the candidate opens the right-click menu. Most commonly this is a path to pasting content via the menu rather than the keyboard shortcut.
👁️
Focus out
Input field lost focus mid-answer
Recorded every time an answer input loses focus. On laptops and phones this is often just normal form interaction — clicking a radio button, opening a keyboard — so we treat it as a form artifact, not a cheat signal, unless the volume is unusually high.
⌨️
Rapid input
Synthetic typing pattern detected
Recorded when 100+ characters appear in under 200 milliseconds — faster than a human can type or dictate. This is a strong signal of automated text insertion.

How we classify

Four risk levels, weighted by signal type. Most assessments fall in the clean or minor bucket.

Clean
No notable signals. Typical of most honest assessments.
Minor
A few signals (up to 3 tab switches, or normal focus behavior). Informational.
Moderate
Clear signals — 7-8 tab switches, a paste event, or a high focus-out count.
Elevated
Frequent signals — 9+ tab switches, multiple pastes, or synthetic typing detected.

The classifier is calibrated so that normal browser behavior — form interaction, mobile keyboard, one-off tab checks — stays in the "clean" bucket. Only genuinely unusual patterns move up.

What appears on the certificate

Two badge states. Both use the same scoring engine. The difference is the environment.

🛡️

Independently Verifiable

No notable environment signals. The score is normal, the certificate is signed, and any employer can verify it via the public URL.

ℹ️

Employer Review Recommended

Notable environment signals were recorded. The score is still valid — the same engine produced it — but employers may wish to verify the candidate's skills in an interview. That's the whole point.

Below the badge, the certificate shows the raw facts — "Frequently left the assessment tab (8 times)", "No external content was pasted into responses" — so an employer can see exactly what happened and make their own call.

What we don't do

We don't accuse. A tab switch is not a cheat. A focus-out is often just the mobile keyboard. We report facts, not verdicts, because the same behavior means different things in different roles and contexts.

We don't block. Nothing in the assessment is prevented by the integrity layer. Candidates can navigate, paste, and interact normally. We just record what happened.

We don't sell the data. Integrity signals appear only on the candidate's own certificate, visible to anyone who has the certificate URL. We never sell or share signals with third parties.
